Mark 12: 29-31
Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
John Wesley’s three simple rules are summarized as “Do no harm. Do good. Stay in love with God.”
A Rule of Life guides you in a pattern of everyday living. In times when the world feels chaotic and values seem to be shifting, rules offer guidance for living more simply. According to the CS Lewis Institute “A Rule establishes a rhythm for life in which is helpful for being formed by the Spirit, a rhythm that reflects a love for God and respect for how God has made us.” What are the rules that help us live into the “Golden Rule?” What guides us to grow into deeper love with God and with our neighbor? And how are we to respond when God’s law conflicts with human law? Throughout September we examine some rules for life as presented in the Gospel according to Mark, the Epistle of James, and Wisdom and other literature.
